The shrill ring of her phone brought her back to the present. She sat up against the headboard. Her heartbeat accelerated as she answered the phone. It was Debby.

“Please give me good news.”

“Hey, chica,” Debby responded. “I hope you’re doing better.”

Earlier, Ayanti had a breakdown. She had screamed and bawled her eyes out, wishing she was back in Calabar, the capital city of her home, Cross Rivers in Nigeria. It seemed like a lifetime ago she won that competition and left the country.

“Yes, I’m fine, but tell me I can be better.”

“Okay, here’s the deal. Charity for Homes had filled up with court ordered volunteers until next month…”

“I can’t wait that long!”

“Lemme finish, girlie. We were able to get you to volunteer with them not as an individual, but under a church group.”

“A church!” Ayanti wiped her hands across her face. She hadn’t been in one of those in years. Did Debby have any idea the kind of judgment that went on in that place? She’d take her chances with the mean police officer until next month.

“Hear me out. The church volunteers with Homes for Charity as a non-sponsor group. You can be part of those volunteers and when they are not volunteering, you can still make up some hours by working in the church. That way, you can get this thing over with faster. Now tell me that doesn’t beat picking up trash in the streets,” Debby finished.

“But those people would have known what I did. Why I’m there…”

“And? Which one of them there hasn’t done anything bad?” Debby asked. “Girl, think about it. Besides, you have nothing else to lose at this point.”

“I guess you’re right.” Ayanti contemplated the whole arrangement.

“Of course I am.” A beat of silence passed between them. “Now get some rest and I’ll see you tomorrow. Think about it and let me know what you want to do. You have until the end of the week.”

“What’s the name of the church?”

“Ummm…hold on.”  The shuffling noise of paper could be heard in the background. “It’s called Calvary Is the Way. It’s on Auburn.”

Ayanti remained silent for a few minutes. After a while they disconnected. Ayanti switched off the television and turned to her side. Calvary Is the Way? She rolled her eyes. These new age churches and their names. What ever happened to churches with sensible names? Like Mount something…

What are your genres?
I’ve written two chicklit bestsellers and I just released a Christian novel.
What have you written? 
My books are “Somethin’ Extra,” “Reinventing the Woman,” and the new book, “He Restores My Soul”
When did you begin your writing career?
I’ve been writing from childhood, but I took it seriously when I was about 25
Are you a full-time or part-time writer? How do you make time to write?
I am a part-time writer. I spend the latter half of my day creating on my laptop.  I believe you make time for anything you want to do; since writing is like breathing to me, I make it a top priority and care out time for my work each day.
What’s your writing process?
I write every day. My most productive creative time is around 4:30 or 5 am.  I work for three hours st that time of day where the words and ideas just flow. I think I’m just more clear and fresh at that time.  Then in the afternoon, I put in another three to four hours.  Hey. That’s about six or seven hours. I guess I do write full-time!
Do you keep a journal? If so, for how long? Do you find it helpful for your professional writing?
I kept a journal in the early days just to help me organize my thoughts and ideas.  But now, I have a goove where a character starts talking in my head and then I build from there. I always know the end of my stories from the beginning and somehow I’m able to keep all the details straight because I become pretty engrossed in their fictional lives.
What’s your inspiration?
I’m an observer and a people watcher, like at the grocery store and subway or if I’m seated by the window of a restaurant, I LOVE watching people walk by and wondering what their story is, based on how they’re dressed or what they are doing in that moment. I also listen to things people say and love the cadence, the rhythm of conversations. The new book, “He Restores My Soul” came from a conversation some of my friends were having about how they felt about black men dating and marrying white women. That moment was so interesting because I was meeting a black colleague who was picking up tix from me to an event. He is very handsome and walked in with his white wife, and the four women with me were so disappointed. I knew I had to recapture that moment in time and present it in my work, really look at why that issue might exist. It was so much fun to write about!
What kind of legacy do you expect your writing to leave?
I want a body of work that makes my family proud, but most importantly, I want God to be pleased. Words have a profound impact and it is a vital responsibility to have a platform. I want people to be encouraged, edified, and entertained.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Start journaling if you aren’t already and write every day. Stick with one story and be a finisher. Too many people start and stop projects and never get anything done. Read a lot of books by the best writers and study their techniques, and take a grammar class every few years, as well as participate in writing classes, workshops, and join a writing group. These are things that most serious writers do.
What’s on your bookshelf or in your e-reader library?
I read a lot of Christian Fiction and Romance.  I just finished Vanessa Miller’s Praise Song series and one of the best romance novels I’ve read in a long time is, “Perfect” by Delaney Diamond.  I also read a lot of biographies and autobiographies.  I just read since April Nile Rogers, Toni Braxton, Norman Lear, Penny Marshall and Garry Marshall. All awesome reads!
What are you currently working on?
I have two things going.   I’m actually developing a half-hour scripted show with a friend as well as working on the second book in my Living Water series.  It’s called “Love and Reverence.”  I thought it would be interesting and helpful to marriages on the brink out here if I looked at how a failing Christian marriage can be restored after the trust is broken and both sides have caused careless pain. The characters will be implementing some of the tools God taught me as He restored my own marriage.  I’m big on the message of restoration.

Tell us about your main character? What actress or actor would you cast to play him or her in a movie about your book?
Zina Fisher is a smart, funny, and ambitious beauty with absolutely no filter. She’s very high strung, and because she grew up sheltered by her family, she thinks she can have it her way every day.
Someone sassy would have to play her who can fuse their natural fire into the character, like Zoe Saldana.  If we pushed slightly older, I would say Gabby Union.

A Lot Can Happen in 365 Days: Three Things I Learned After A Year in Publishing

I’m happy to celebrate with my girl Nigeria as she launches the release of her third novel! Today, she’s stopping by to offer some inspiration to fellow writers and to share an excerpt from her latest book, Tempted to Touch. Enjoy!

Every writer has experienced a day or two (or a month) where all you do is look up at the sky, sigh, and ask the Lord, “When is this thing going to happen for me?”

If you get a publishing deal you start doing the happy dance only to find out that your release date is almost ten months to one year after the date you’ve submitted the book. So, you spend another month with a crick in your neck because you’re constantly looking up asking the same question.

I know this because a year ago this was me. I was anxiously waiting for the release of my first novel, Born at Dawn and two years ago I was waiting for the publisher to offer me a contract.

Now fast forward to join me where I presently am in my writer’s journey; my first novel Born at Dawn won the 2015 Phillis Wheatley Award for First Fiction, my second novel, Seasoned with Grace was released in July to some great reviews including a review right here by Faith Simone and in Publisher’s Weekly (Woot! Woot!). I am currently one week away from releasing my third book, Tempted to Touch by my own, yes, my own independent publishing company, Inheritance Books. After only one year in publishing I’ve learned that a lot can happen in 365 days. Here are some of the big takeaways for me:

  1. You are bigger than you think. Don’t let that newbie author status hold you back. Everyone isn’t going to embrace you because they don’t know you, but them being unaware of the gift that God has placed inside of you shouldn’t stop you from strutting through the door. Keep pushing. Try and unlock the side door if you have to, but don’t avoid knocking on the door because you believe you’re too small. I submitted Born at Dawn to the Phillis Wheatley Award competition and Seasoned with Grace to Publisher’s Weekly for review and found out I am bigger than I thought.
  2. God’s glory will open every door. I couldn’t bust through those big doors if it wasn’t for His glory on my life. I took the gift He gave me, and gave it back to Him. He hasn’t let me down.
  3. Listen to the Unction of the Holy Spirit. So, I started this publishing company, Inheritance Books this year, as in 2015. I never considered myself to be a business maven, but while on jury duty I suddenly felt very industrious and started setting up Inheritance Books. After I received my logo I showed my logo to my sister. She liked it, but she asked me why I was creating a publishing company when I already had a publisher. My response was, “I don’t know, but I feel like there’s a hole and I want to fill it.” I genuinely didn’t know why I was doing what I doing until two days after that conversation with my sister when my publisher announced that they were cutting the Christian Fiction line. There was the hole that Inheritance Books was designed to fill and now I’m preparing to publish books that entertain and edify. Starting with our first release Tempted to Touch. We’ll also be hosting webinars (for all kinds of dream chasers) and workshops for authors because I want you to #GetyourInheritance too!

“Is that…?” Onyjie gasped after flipping my laptop open as I tried to press it closed when she entered my office.

“Yes, that’s Quincy, and this is not what it looks like,” I said, pointing to the screen. The mint green lacquer on her nails gleamed in my eyes making it difficult for me to formulate a good lie.

“I hope not.” Onyjie wagged her head and folded her arms across her chest. “It looks to me like you’re cyber stalking him.”

My head shook from side to side. There was no real way for me to make an innocent afternoon of research appear innocent. “No, I bumped into him this morning. He gave me his card.” This would be a great moment for a genie to pop out and shazaam the card would appear in my hand while Onyjie tapped the toe of her metallic silver booties on the floor waiting to find the hole in my story. I don’t know why she went into accounting after college. She has the entire detective thing down pact right down to the cold stare and twisted mouth.

“He’s in the industry now.”

“What industry? The how-to-get-a-divorce-in-ninety-days industry?” she asked, pointing at Quincy’s almond colored face.

“No, the music industry,” I said, laughing to disguise my guilt. I had not so much as called him and Onyjie already had me feeling like I was committing adultery.

“Girl, please. He’s been in the music industry since you met him like fifteen years ago. It turned out that all he did was hand out flyers for Diddy.” Onyjie adjusted her black and white graphic print A-line skirt and parked a quarter of her thigh on my desk.

“Make yourself at home,” I offered, sliding the laptop out of the way. “All that street team stuff is in the past. Now he’s the boss. He runs MacMusic.”

Onyjie shrugged her shoulders and shook her pepper colored pin curls. “Never heard of it. If, and I stress the word, if, this is a legitimate recording company, what do you think is going to happen? You cut a demo and then you’re going to blow up?”

I lowered my head and focused my eyes on a nick in my new desk to hide my smile. Was I being naïve in thinking that a chance encounter with my former lover was the key to living my dreams? Well, he wasn’t quite a lover. Quincy was more like the love you-leave you-then-love you again type.

Onyjie seemingly caught onto my quiet contemplation, or my poor avoidance tactics, and snapped my laptop shut. “You better let the past remain in the past.”

“I have. It’s been ten years since we’ve even seen each other. I entertained him off and on after we graduated, but once Mason and I got married I cut that off. You’re acting like I went and hired a private eye,” I said, swatting her hand off my laptop and popping it back open. “I bumped into him at Joe’s House of Java.”

“Yeah, and Eve bumped into Satan in the garden while she was picking up lunch.” Onyjie folded her arms and the corners of her mouth into a scowl at the same time. “You think you’re the first pretty girl he’s given his card. He probably has two baby mamas and a girlfriend. Don’t be no fool, girl.”

No one ever forgets their first time at anything, and launching a writing career is no different. I take special pleasure in introducing debut novelists. Which is why I’m absolutely thrilled to share my interview with Candice Y. Johnson, a new voice in Adult Christian Fiction. She’s witty, engaging and believes in keepin’ it real. Enjoy!
What have you written? 
What haven’t I written? I’ve taken a stab at everything from simply tagging my John Hancock on a brand new apartment lease, to the exit paperwork after the position at the job I’d worked for was suddenly eliminated after 14 years! Seriously, though – I have freelanced for TV Guide magazine, The Dallas Morning News, The Associated Press, Curly Nikki, and my own natural hair blog, The Frizzness.
When did you begin your writing career?
I’ve always had a love affair with words; I began reading at an age when most kids are concentrating on crayons as a midday snack. Reading books and playing with poetry became my world! In high school, I was blessed to attend journalism camps, which eventually led to an editorial assistant gig for the AP.
Are you a full-time or part-time writer? How do you make time to write?
Full-time…by default. But I’m also the Artistic Director of Ordered Steps Productions Dance Company, and I balance between dancing and writing by hitting the keyboard during the day, stolen moments at night when I’m not teaching/rehearsing, or typing notes into my phone when the words won’t stop talking to me.
What’s your writing process? 
In most cases, I crave NOISE around me. So when I’m writing during the day, I love having the sounds of the court shows entertaining me. I’m not really all that deep and don’t take myself too seriously, so my method is totally informal. And food. I always need food in my path.
Do you keep a journal? If so, for how long? Do you find it helpful for your professional writing?
I stopped keeping a journal years ago, but oddly enough I’m obsessed with them. My personal Facebook page has loads of interactive activity and serves as an online journal of sorts, so I jot my posts into the piles of books I have in my home.
What’s your inspiration? 
Anything that makes me laugh, and most of what doesn’t break me.
What kind of legacy do you expect your writing to leave? The same as my dance – a legacy of healing hearts.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Kick FEAR in the teeth and let it know it doesn’t own you! Go for it – don’t let the opinions of others keep you from completing your destiny.

Mostly novels by Michelle Stimpson, Tiffany L. Warren and Kimberla Lawson Roby.
What are you currently working on?
The next novel in my Practice What You Praise series is already getting my attention, as well as a children’s book series that won’t let my heart go.

So yeah, if you know anything about me, you can probably guess that Practice What You Praise is right up my alley. Church politics and whatnot are a trip. I’ve been the judgmental looking-down-my-nose type (Lord forgive me) and I’ve been the one totally aware of my need for grace. Thank God for growth and maturity in Him!  Plus, back in the day I was a fierce praise dancer. I would try to find a picture, but y’all ain’t ready!

I can attest to VCM’s ability to manage these perspectives because she’s done it before.  There are so many people on both sides of the divide that refuse to entertain the thought that there could be valid points on either side. My hope for this book is that is sparks genuine conversation.
